Two More Quick Little Things

By sovknight | July 23, 2008

Why is it, when the price of oil goes up, that gas station employees are immediately on the ladder outside with the little magnetic numbers raising the prices, sometimes within hours of any announced spike in oil prices?  Yet when the price of oil drops, as it has recently, the price at the pump doesn’t even move?

According to the news, the price of a barrel of oil has dropped by record levels twice in the last two weeks.  It’s something like $10 or $12 dollars less than it was a couple of weeks ago.  However, the price of gasoline hasn’t budged at all.  Not one penny.

If however, some news agency reports that the price of oil has gone up even a small amount, like $1.00, the price of gas immediately ratchets up a few cents.

Tell me again there’s no conspiracy, or that gas prices have anything at all to do with supply and demand.  It’s pure, greedy bullshit.

I believe it’s impossible to flip an egg without breaking the yolk.  I like eggs, and I like them over easy.  They don’t fit into my diet too well, except in extreme moderation.  If I only eat one at a time, and maybe two or three a week, the benefits of eggs far outweigh the downsides.  However, I’ll be damned if I can flip one over without breaking the yolk, which is severely disappointing, because I like to dip the bread in the yolk and eat it that way.  It’s my favorite part of the egg, (although I do eat it all.)  Try as I might, I just can’t do it.  I therefore believe it’s simply physically impossible.  It pisses me off.

I have wondered the same thing about gas. If there’s even a rumor that oil prices might go up, the prices on gasoline start climbing, but they don’t bring the price back down just as quickly if oil prices fall. You’ve pegged it right: greed.

Same thing with food prices going up due to gas prices going up. Fine and dandy, but what about local things like Winder Dairy and Cache Valley Cheese? Must they also go up in price? I think not, but any excuse people can think of to raise prices and still keep people buying, they’ll go with it.

As for the egg thing — how can you dip your bread in yolk if it’s overeasy? And if you like it liquidy, why not jsut go with sunnyside up?

Don’t even get me started on gas. I drive about 80 miles a day (mostly highway-but I get stuck in construction stop-and-go-traffic every morning). I feel like screaming as my miles per gallon take a nose dive! Oh well.

Anyways-gas has gone down a little in Ohio. I saw it for $3.66 today off of Needmore (if I used my Kroger card it would have been $3.56)
I think it got as high as $4.09 earlier this summer?

Your eggs-try letting them cook longer before flipping.

@Jess: Gas is currently $4.15 here at the cheapest places. This is interesting to me because there are TWO… count them, TWO oil refineries about 15 minutes from here. If anything, gas should be cheaper here than most other places.

Utah is the 3rd highest on gas right now (Alaska and Hawaii are the top 2). I was reading an article today talking about that and the fact that most states have the lowest gas grade as 87 octane, something that is 10 cents more here. I know that Gov. Huntsman called the refineries on their crap last year and suddenly gas dropped like $0.30. We should be in the 3 lowest, not the 3 highest!

As for the egg situation, have you tried spraying your spatula with pam before trying to flip the egg? That might help!

RedHead, RedHead, RedHead…how can you be so smart, and yet so challenged?

The secret to a happy flipped egg is a non-stick pan, a generous amount of PAM on both pan and spatula (use a broad, plastic one with a good edge…no metal or narrow nonsense), and some patience. Put the heat on medium, and when the albumen is just starting to whiten up and solidify, turn the handle of the pan so that your “stupid” hand is holding the pan, not the spatula (yes, I know you’re ambidextrous, Captain Amazing - just use your dumber hand, then) and slide the spatula underneath the egg (it should go easily, with no resistance). Here’s where the magic of the wide spatula kicks in - it will handily cradle your egg’s entire width. Now, do NOT flip the egg over like Gary Busey flips over a motor vehicle of any kind! Instead, TILT the spatula so that the egg rolls over onto its obverse side and then gently flatten out the albumen (without crushing the yolk).

That’s it. I like to dunk my toast in my egg, too, although the ultimate egg at breakfast is a fried egg that is popped over Spanish Rice and allowed to blend with the flavors to create a melange of pure deliciousness!

Yeah, and feel free to mock me for my long egg flipping explanation. While y’all are busy feeling superior, I’ll be over here, enjoying my non-ruined eggs.

I drive more than just about anyone I know (however, Jess has me beaten by a few miles ;) ). Gas is KILLING me. Literally. I took on a 2nd job over the summer so I could save the money to use for gas so I can drive to school in the fall. However, I’ve had to use that extra money to pay for gas NOW. I’m going to be bus-ing it in the fall!
The answer isn’t in the oil refineries, drilling off shore, or savaging the Alaska frontier (which I’m totally for!). Nor will you find the answer in buying hybrid. The only answer I’ve found is just driving less. Plain and simple. Take the bus, carpool, bike/walk, get a job closer to home. That is the ultimate conservation trick.
How do you save money? Spend less. How do you save gas? Drive less.
